Products, packages, and delivery setup

Product packagings describe how a product is contained and identified. Package types describe the size and weight limits of a container. Packages are container records that group products so the whole package can move together, or its products can later move as individual units. Use these setup records before you work with inventory movements that depend on their packaging or delivery details.

Start with Before you start to confirm access, then use Find an inventory setup record to open the relevant list.

Before you start

Before you change an inventory setup record, know which list you need and have the required access group for that surface. Product Packagings, Packages, Package Types, Barcode Nomenclatures, and Zip Prefix each use access rules. Fields such as Unit of Measure, Company, Owner, and Lot or Serial Number also depend on the required access group.

With the required access and information ready, use Find an inventory setup record.

Find an inventory setup record

Use this procedure to open the list that matches the inventory setup job you need to do.

Prerequisites

• You know which setup record you need.
• You have the permission for that surface.

Steps

1. Open Inventory.

2. Open the menu branch shown in the table, then select the corresponding entry:

Result: The selected inventory setup list opens, ready for the matching setup procedure below.

Configure product packagings

Use a product packaging record to record how many units a packaging holds and how that packaging is identified.

Prerequisites

• You have opened Product Packagings.
• You have the required access group for Product Packagings.

Steps

1. Review the packaging list. Its columns include the sequence handle, Product, Packaging, Contained quantity, Unit of Measure, Barcode, and Company.
2. Open a packaging record to review its form.
3. Review Packaging as the packaging name.
4. Review Product as the associated product.
5. Review Contained quantity as the quantity held by the packaging.
6. Review Unit of Measure when your account has the required access group for units.
7. Review Barcode as the packaging identifier.
8. Review Company when your account has the required access group for company fields.
9. On a saved packaging record, treat Product as read-only.

The Product field appears on the standard packaging form and is omitted from the alternate form. The alternate list makes the packaging list editable at the bottom. The Unit of Measure and Company fields follow the required access group.

Result: The packaging list or form shows the product packaging details available to your account; continue to Define package types when container limits are next.

Define package types

Use a package type when packages need consistent physical limits, storage capacity, or an optional barcode.

Prerequisites

• You have opened Package Types.
• You have the required access group for Package Types.

Steps

1. Review the package type list. Its columns include Name, Height, Width, Length, Maximum Weight, and Barcode.
2. Open a package type to review its form.
3. Enter or review the container Size using Length, Width, and Height.
4. Enter or review Base Weight.
5. Enter or review Maximum Weight.
6. Enter or review Barcode.
7. Review Company when your account has the required access group for company fields.
8. Review storage-category capacity when your account has the required access group for storage categories.
9. In the capacity list, review Storage Category and Quantity for each capacity row.

The size display uses the length unit shown with the dimensions. Storage-category capacity is controlled by the required access group, and Company is available only with the required access group.

Result: The package type form shows the dimensions, weights, barcode, company, and available storage-category capacity; continue to Manage packages and contents when you need to review a container.

Manage packages and contents

Use a package record to review grouped products, move the whole package together, or return its products to individual-unit handling.

Prerequisites

• You have opened Packages.
• You have a saved package to review before using its form actions.

Steps

1. Open a package record.

2. Review Package Reference to identify the package.

3. Review Package Type, Company, Owner, and Location.

4. Review the Content list.

5. Review the content fields that are available to your account:

   Content detail	What to review
   Product	The item included in the package.
   Lot/Serial Number	The lot or serial identifier.
   Quantity	The number of units included.
   Unit of Measure	The unit used for the amount.

6. Select the action that matches your next task:

   Return the contents to individual-unit handling	Unpack
   Review transfers connected with the package	Package Transfers

The Packages action opens in kanban, tree, or form mode. When the list is empty, the screen uses these messages:

Create a new package

Packages are usually created via transfers (during pack operation) and can contain different products.

Once created, the whole package can be moved at once, or products can be unpacked and moved as single units again.

Result: The package form shows its reference, available details, contents, and package actions; continue to Handle access and setup problems if a list, field, or response does not appear as expected.
