# Videos overview

## Videos at a glance

A narrated video is a page walkthrough that combines a video, optional captions, chapters, and
interactive step markers. The **Videos** destination is where you choose the project whose videos
you want to view; a public video opens in a chaptered player.

| If you need to… | Go to |
| --- | --- |
| Open the project video list | [Find the Videos destination](#find-the-videos-destination) |
| Choose a project | [Find the Videos destination](#find-the-videos-destination) |
| Identify the player and its controls | [Understand the video surface](#understand-the-video-surface) |
| Select chapters or captions while reviewing | [Review a video](#review-a-video) |
| Follow the complete review procedure | [Review a video](doc:review-a-video) |
| Read the available video actions | [Video reference](doc:video-reference) |
| Open a public player with a video ID | Public video viewer |

The signed-in **Videos** destination is available in the application navigation. A public viewer
opens when you provide a video ID. Its available controls are **Chapters**, **Captions on**,
**Captions off**, **Download**, and **Jump to this step**.

## Before you start

Before opening the project video list, select the project whose narrated walkthroughs you want to
view. A public player uses a video ID instead of the project selector.

| Before you start | What it determines |
| --- | --- |
| A current project | The project video area can load the project's videos. |
| A signed-in session with an access token | The project video list can be requested. |
| A selected video | The player, editor, and video actions can appear. |
| A video URL | The player and share, embed, and download actions can appear. |
| A captions URL | The captions control can appear. |
| Chapters | The chapter list and chapter buttons can appear. |
| Hotspots | Interactive step markers can appear while playback is near their time. |
| A video ID | The public viewer can request one video. |

## Find the Videos destination

The **Videos** destination is the signed-in entry point for videos belonging to the selected project.

| Control | Options |
| --- | --- |
| **Select a project from the header dropdown** | The list holds returned project names; each appears under **Recent** or **All Projects**. |

**Prerequisites**

- You are signed in.
- You know which project you want to view.

**Steps**

1. Select **Videos** in the application navigation.
2. Open **Select a project from the header dropdown**.
3. Use **Search projects…** to narrow the project options.
4. Select a returned project-name option under **Recent** or **All Projects**.

   | If you are starting with… | Use… |
   | --- | --- |
   | A project you selected recently | **Recent** |
   | A project outside the recent list | **All Projects** |
   | A known public video ID | The public video viewer |

5. If the search returns no match, refine the search text after `No projects found` appears.

**Result:** The Videos destination opens with the selected project as the context for the project
video surface.

Continue to the video surface to identify the player and the controls available for that video.

## Understand the video surface

The video surface is the place where you play a selected walkthrough and, when its data supplies
the related features, use chapters, captions, hotspots, sharing, embedding, downloading, or
narration-script controls.

| Area | What you can use there |
| --- | --- |
| Selected video | The native video player when the video has a video URL. |
| Sharing row | **Copy share link**, **Copy embed code**, and **Download** when a video URL is available. |
| Narration script | **Intro**, each Step field, and **Outro** multiline fields when the video has an editable script. |
| Script actions | **Save script** when a draft script exists, and **Re-render video** when a video is selected. |
| Viewer bar | **Chapters**, **Captions on**, **Captions off**, and **Download** when the video includes the related chapters or captions. |
| Step markers | **Jump to this step** when an active hotspot has no custom label. A custom hotspot label replaces that default label. |

The project surface can also show an empty project state, an empty video list, a selected video with
no editable script, or no share and embed row when the selected video has no video URL. The public
viewer presents its player only after the video request succeeds. After identifying the available
controls, continue to the review procedure.

## Review a video

A video review is a focused watch of a page walkthrough using its player, chapters, captions, and
interactive step markers. Use the detailed [Review a video](doc:review-a-video) procedure after
you have opened the Videos destination.

**Prerequisites**

- A video is selected.
- The selected video has a video URL if you want to use the player.

**Steps**

1. Select a video from the project video list.
2. Use the native video player controls to start playback.
3. Select a chapter button to seek to that chapter and continue playback from its start.
4. Select **Captions off** or **Captions on** to change the captions display when captions are available.
5. Select an active **Jump to this step** marker to seek to the step it represents.

**Result:** The player follows the selected chapter and playback position, captions use the selected
setting, and an active step marker can move playback to its associated step.

If the surface displays a different message, use the matching branch in the next section.

## When the surface differs

The Videos destination changes its content according to the project and video data available to it.
Use the message on screen to choose the matching branch.

| What appears | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| `No project selected` | Select a project from the header dropdown. |
| `Loading videos…` | Wait for the project video list to finish loading. |
| `Turn your manual into narrated videos` | Select **Generate narrated videos** when that action is available. |
| `Generate narrated videos` | Select **Generate narrated videos** when that action is available on the empty Videos surface. |
| `This video has no editable script.` | Review the video without script editing. |
| `Loading…` | Wait for the public player request to finish. |
| `This video isn’t available.` | Check the public video ID and open the public viewer again. |
| `Could not copy to the clipboard.` | Check the browser clipboard permission before trying the copy action again. |
| `Copied!` | The selected share link or embed code has been copied. |
| `Script saved. Re-render to update the video.` | Select **Re-render video** to refresh the saved narration. |
| `Editing the narration script is a Pro feature. Upgrade to edit.` | Use a plan that permits narration-script editing before selecting **Save script**. |
| `Could not save the script.` | Check the script and try **Save script** again. |
| `Re-render queued — the video will refresh shortly.` | Wait for the video to refresh. |
| `Re-rendering video is a Pro feature. Upgrade to re-render.` | Use a plan that permits video re-rendering before selecting **Re-render video**. |
| `Could not queue a re-render.` | Try **Re-render video** again. |
| A published project share link | Use **Copy share link** for the live page link. |
| An unpublished project share link | Use the standalone video player link returned by **Copy share link** in the sharing row. |

The empty project surface also says `The project dropdown in the header sets the project for every
enterprise surface.` and `Select a project from the header dropdown to view its narrated walkthrough
videos.`

## What to do next

After you identify the surface, continue with the page that matches your next job.

| Next job | Page |
| --- | --- |
| Select and review a narrated video | [Review a video](doc:review-a-video) |
| Look up video fields, actions, and messages | [Video reference](doc:video-reference) |
| Move between application destinations | [Navigation basics](doc:navigation-basics) |

The detailed review, sharing, embedding, script-saving, re-rendering, captions, chapter, and hotspot
actions depend on the video and project data available when you use the surface.
